National Premier League (NPL)

National Premier League (NPL)

The National Premier Leagues (NPL) is a national competition platform created to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape by extending developmental principles espoused by U.S. Soccer into more age groups and clubs, linking competition with player development and identification platforms, and providing meaningful weekly competition culminating in a national postseason.

The NPL Division of SOCAL NPL was created to provide a national development platform with the highest level of competition in Southern California, and to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape based upon US Club Soccer fundamental principles.

SOCAL NPL provides opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to compete in one of the most comprehensive soccer competitions in the country. Its mission is to elevate soccer by developing players, clubs, coaches and referees.

In a move that has been years in the making, NorCal and SOCAL NPL are proud to have established the California Cup with the aim of producing a true annual champion for youth soccer in the Golden State starting in 2022. The California Cup, which is run in conjunction with US Club Soccer, features the two State Cup finalists from each organization and pits them against each other each year at different venues around the state. Across the combined competition of both State Cups, over 5,000 teams are expected to participate within multiple levels of play for a spot in the California Cup.

NPLs are leagues unified under one national competition platform and based on a common technical framework. More specifically, the NPL provides a platform:

  • focused on long-term player development
  • allowing consistent, meaningful high-level games appropriately scheduled with higher training-to-game ratios and eliminate calendar congestion
  • integrated with the id² Program, which includes Player Development Programs (PDPs) in select local markets
